The importance of the man cave
To begin with, we headed to the Urban Dictionary to look up the most popular definition for a man cave:
- A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in his hobbies, activities without any interruption. The man cave can take the form of a basement, a shed, a garage or a spare room.
This may seem a bit tongue in cheek, a bit of a laugh, but studies have shown the importance of creating such a dwelling. Many people wrongly believe that the construction of a man cave is the man’s attempt to isolate himself from his partner, but research has shown that a man cave can become an important factor in a successful relationship. The idea of a man cave has certainly hit the UK by storm; regardless of budget Britain’s menfolk are claiming their own space.
The contents of such man caves are pretty standard:
- Cars
- Workbenches
- Tools
- Well stocked fridge
- Huge television
- Distasteful posters
- BBQ
- Computer
- Gym Equipment
The above list highlights the wide range of hobbies carried out in a man cave. Some practice sports there, some spend their time writing, some working on projects and some just relax. In such a space, a man can concentrate fully on whatever the task at hand is.
So what form does the man cave take? It can take any form really, a basement, an attic, a spare room. The best man caves however, have to be separate dwellings. We believe that a shed, summerhouse or a garage is ideal, from our experience; these are the things being fixed up the most by eager men. Gone are the days in which garages were brightly lit and cold only fit to accommodate a car. Today they can be warm and comfortable areas.
We asked Paul Norman, a customer who bought a summerhouse from ourselves to turn into an office, what the advantages are of owning an office man cave:
‘ The main advantage of turning my summerhouse into an office is the fact that the house remains undisturbed, I can come out her and do my work, then go back home after I have finished completely dissociated from work, allowing me to relax and enjoy my evening’
