Secateurs – one of a gardeners best friends!

At this time of year and indeed any time of year there is always something to prune in the garden. Most serious gardeners never set foot in their plot without carrying a pair and you could say that they are one of the most important tools you can have in your gardening armoury. Keep them handy as you will always find something that needs a clip. Whether it is deadheading roses or herbaceous perennials, cutting flowers for the home and harvesting fruit, secateurs will become one of your favourite tools: an extension of your hand.

So what is the best type of secateurs to buy? Many gardeners will say it is a very personal thing; with weight and comfort two of the main factors. But there are other considerations. With so many different types of secateurs on the market, which should you choose? There are other important things after what feels good for you to consider before buying. Some have a ratchet mechanism that takes longer to cut through because they do so in small steps but are easier to use especially if your hands are not too strong. Others have a handle that ‘rolls’ in your palm as you cut which are relaxing to use, and easier when the workload is heavy.

Whichever tools you use, especially cutting tools, it’s important to look after them. Secateurs, when sharp are a pleasure to use, because when they cut cleanly they won’t tear the stems leaving unsightly, ragged flap and strands left to die off. Try to remember to remove the sap residue from secateurs blades after each use, by spray or wiping clean with oil. Store safely in a dry place so they don’t rust – and out of reach of small inquisitive hands. Sharpen your Secateurs regularly and they will continue to give good service for years.
