Lawn Care: Tips for a healthy summer lawn

Lawn care is a year-round task to ensure your grass is strong and healthy,  but here are some tips to keep your lawn looking its best throughout the summer.

Mowing

Mowing your lawn keeps it looking tidy but also helps encourage growth and strong roots, which will keep your grass healthy and help it cope better in harsh weather conditions.

Lawn mower

Although mowing the lawn has its benefits, if done incorrectly it can be very damaging to the grass and even cause it to wilt and die. Here are some basic tips to follow when mowing:

  • Don’t cut the grass too short, it is better to do a regular short cut rather than cutting the grass close to the roots because this can cause damage and also stop it being able to fight off weeds and moss.
  • Try and leave the grass when it is very hot and wet, cutting in these conditions can cause damage. If you do need to cut the grass in hot weather, only take off a small amount off the top.
  • Always keep your lawnmower blades sharp and adjust to the correct height to prevent cutting too short.
  • Some of the grass clippings can be left on the surface of the grass in warm weather to help the lawn absorb extra moisture.

Feeding

Using a lawn feeder encourages growth and improves colour, meaning you will have a lush green garden to enjoy all summer long. As well as looking good, a well fed lawn has extra nutrients to help fight off weeds and moss, so there’s no reason to not give your lawn the benefits of a good lawn feeder.

There are many different types of lawn feeders but a good all rounder is ‘Green Up Liquid Lawn Feed n Weed’ which feeds the grass whilst also fighting off unwanted guests such as weeds.

Watering

In the summer months, when it is especially warm, your lawn will benefit from a light watering. To make this easier and save time it is definitely worth investing in a lawn sprinkler. Be sure not to over water as this can actually damage the grass.

New lawns that have just been turfed or seeded will need extra watering in the first few months to help them grow strong and healthy.
