Gardener’s Diary – November 2013
RAKE THE LEAVES
Clear your lawns, paths and driveways using our specialist leaf rake and grab or a standard leaf rake. Keeping your garden clear of leaves and debris will help to prevent the lawn from becoming too wet. If the lawn becomes too wet and bogged down moss growth will be promoted.
Garden incinerators are a great way to get rid of any unwanted garden waste that you are not going to use in your compost bin! Leaves can be put in the compost bin but are better if made into leaf mold!
BE PREPARED FOR THE FROSTS
Protect your plants with fleece before the first frosts or bring more tender species of plants into a sheltered position or greenhouse. Keep them toasty with a greenhouse heater.
DON’T FORGET THE BIRDS
Keep the little tweeters happy and the table well stocked with food, refresh birdbath water and hang fat snax.
GET PONDS READY FOR WINTER
Clear the pond of leaves and cover with a pond net to protect from any further debris. Leaves and debris if left in the pond will cause pollution and harmful toxins will arise. Covering with a net also gives you the added bonus of protecting your fish from hungry Herons.
Don’t forget a Pond Heater! Now is the time for you to think about pond heaters (bermuda pond heater, oase icefree 20 or hozelock pond heater). Pond heaters are recommended for protection against the frost. If your pond freezes over completely, gases and toxins will build up underneath the ice causing harm to your fish. A pond heater simply leaves a small area of water unfrozen for these gases to escape.
