Garden Trends For 2014
The Garden Media Group released its annual consumer trend report back in August, but in August who wants to discuss next year? So we have waited until now to tell you about the up and coming trends for the garden in 2014.
We have 12 trends that will change how your garden looks but also your gardening habits.
According to the 2014 Garden Trends Report, consumers are spending more of their spare time outdoors and when giving the home a decorating overhaul, it now extends to the garden as well. Over the past year there has been an increasing trend to buy garden games, have garden parties and also go glamping, these additional activities have impacted on the record growth in garden furniture and accessories.
Over the Summer month’s there was an increase in buying decorative bird-feeders, unusual planters, candle holders and outdoor fountains.
Worldwide gardening and outdoor living is expected to increase yearly by 3.5 percent up until 2016, by then the industry will be worth an estimated £136 billion pounds. Susan McCoy, the president of Garden Media said: “After several years of suffering from a bleak economy, the sun is starting to shine again. The economy is improving and people across the world are beginning to relax a little when spending money.”
For 2014 it is all about how gardeners are really starting to understand their surroundings and allowing nature to develop in the garden without any heavy maintenance, Susan goes on to say, ” People are determined to be happy and thoughtful in their actions since they will now have more money to spend in the year ahead.”
Gardeners still want their garden to look beautiful and make it look like another room has been added to the house, but this year it is all about achieving that with high quality, eco-friendly products with only a small carbon footprint.
Here are the 12 trends you should look out for next year:
- Recycling – Something our government is always trying to encourage and now the garden industry is too. A compost heap or bin is a must in any garden in 2014, get rid of those food scraps, let them bio-degrade so you can have your own healthy compost for your plants.
- Be Your Own Supplier – Try and grow everything yourself, any fruit and vegetables you usually buy from the supermarket plant them in your garden instead. You will give yourself a constant supply, but you will also save yourself money!
- Fresh Juice From The Garden – That is correct, more and more people are drinking from their garden. Blueberries and Raspberries are easy to pick, wash and make a smoothie, this way of living is coming back around again. People are growing more and more themselves.
- Dress It Up – Add a unique birdcage into your garden and fill it with bird food or even add some jars that insects can adopt as a new home.
- Bee-nice – Most people don’t like this insect and tend to run away from it, but in 2014 you will need Bees. Bees are the best insect for you to have in your garden, they do different jobs to help your garden, some of which we take for granted, Bees help to pollinate flowers, trees and vegetables.
- Add Some Culture – Mixing cultures in your garden in 2014 is a must. Make sure you experiment with different styles and find the culture that suits your garden the best.
- A Splash Of Colour – Find just one colour that you would like to have in your garden and use it in different ways, place it in a planter, in the boarders and even in the hanging baskets.
- Geometric Shapes – Don’t plant your flowers in neat lines, it is all about planting your flowers into shapes like triangles, circles and squares to create a unique design in your boarders.
- Men Will Help – More young men have got involved with gardening in the past year, so expect to see more of them helping in the garden in 2014.
- Think Gardens – Gardening makes us more productive and less stressed, so when you feel your blood pressure is rising, think garden!
- Green Fingers Turn To Tech – Gardening joins in and there will be multiple gardening apps available on the go.
- Plant A Tree – Between 2000-2012 we lost enough trees to cover the UK six times over, that is a lot of trees lost, this is because of storms, disease, fires and deforestation. For 2014 plant a tree and help the environment.
