Only the finest Sunbrella® Fabrics are used in the manufacture of Barlow Tyrie’s cushions & upholstery. A truly outdoor material made from highly durable 100% solution dyed acrylic fibre that is UV colour fast in sunlight.

Not all fabrics used on outdoor furniture are the same, initially – when new it’s very hard to distinguish between the good, the bad & the best – but the benefits of solution dying become clear if you think Carrot vs. Radish !

“Sunbrella®” is the brand name of the global manufacturer – established in the 1960’s, who produce 100% solution dyed acrylic fabrics. Solution dying means that the fibres of the fabric are created by extruding a pigmented chemical solution, BEFORE they are woven into the material that forms the cushions. It does not need dying as the fibres are already the final colour it’s “born that colour.”
As opposed to having the colour printed on or Piece Dyeing AFTER the often white cloth has been made. Think of this as the difference between a Carrot & a Radish.. The fibres of a solution dyed fabric can be exposed to the elements, retain their colour and can be subjected to harsh cleaning processes.

: Solution Dyed Fibres – Are extruded in the chosen colour at the beginning of the process

: Like a Carrot – The whole fibre is coloured deep to the core, for ultimate durability

: Piece or Vat Dyed Fibres, are dipped in the chosen colour, but fade & deteriorate over time

: Like a Radish – The colour sits on the surface of the fibres only

In addition to the outstanding UV colourfast properties of this performance fabric, acrylic fabrics do not promote mildew growth, they are stain resistant and can cleaned easily with soap & water, and even a Bleach spray. The fabrics feel soft to the touch, and can be used indoors and out, ideal for sunny garden rooms, summerhouses & conservatories where other fabrics would fade.

CURRENT Sunbrella Fabric Options: available in Standard or Waterproof Sunbrella-Rain® Fabric Versions.
Waterproof Sunbrella-Rain fabrics are EXACTLY THE SAME as the STANDARD fabrics, and no difference in look or outer surface feel, the Rain versions have the waterproof barrier APPLIED TO THE REAR / INSIDE the cushion and this is not seen.

Sunbrella-Rain® Fabric has an additional barrier finish applied to the INSIDE of the fabric which is 100% waterproof. This membrane in conjunction with “Aqua-Seal” self-swelling thread which seals the stitch holes when wet, and moisture vents creates the ultimate outdoor cushion.

How to clean Sunbrella

All Sunbrella^® fabrics are engineered to combine the highest level of design and performance. For easy day-to-day maintenance of your Sunbrella fabric:

Brush off loose dirt.
Spray on a cleaning solution of water and mild soap.
Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
Air dry.

Mould and mildew stains

Sunbrella^® fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances if not removed from the fabric. To remove mould or mildew:

Prepare a solution of one cup (250 / 300 ml) of bleach and one quarter of a cup (60 / 75 ml of mild detergent per 4 litres of water.
Spray on entire area and allow it to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.
Clean entire surface area with a sponge, clean towel or soft bristle brush.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue.
Air dry.

For severe mould/mildew growth, bleach quantities may be increased.

It is best to clean the entire surface area of the fabric to avoid water rings and stains.
