The Importance of Watering Your Garden

Once you have your dream garden, it now needs caring for with love and attention. The single most important thing you need to do to maintain your garden is undertaking and adhering to a proper watering regime.  Plants which are dehydrated not only fail to develop properly; they also become increasingly vulnerable to damage from pests. On the other side of things, over watering can be a problem. Plants and flowers which sit in too much water can be prone to rotting and other diseases, especially when watered at night.

There is a great debate surrounding the best time to water your plants. Some gardeners believe that watering your plants during early morning is the best time to both maximise your water use and promote healthy plants. The reason for this is simple, mornings are cool and often wind levels remain low, meaning less water is lost through the process of evaporation. Evenings are similar, but as previously mentioned; leaving plants soaked overnight can cause issues.

The landscaping of your garden is also an element which has to be considered.  If your garden is flat, brilliant, the soil should retain the water well. If your garden is set into a hill and isn’t flat, you may have to water more often because of water running out of the ground.

So now you should have diagnosed the levelling of your garden and decided on the time of day you want to water your plants. Now onto the question of … how much water do you need to use and how often do I need to water my plants?! With water meters fitted to many of our homes now, this question has never been so relevant.

The best way to gauge a gardens need for water is simply by studying your garden. If you soil is dry down to a depth of around half an inch, water is needed. How often do you have to water? This question all depends on the weather and your garden. With temperatures in the mid 20’s watering once a week should be enough, if the temperature rises to the mid 30’s however, watering every couple of days may be necessary.

When watering, take care to ensure the soil is damp, although this can be time consuming it is a much better undertake a proper watering weekly, than a light sprinkling daily. Be mindful when using a hose to water your plants, a powerful spray can damage delicate flora.
