Spruce up your pond with Marginal plants

Marginal and Oxygenating Plants.

Aquatic plants have arrived and are ready to go into your pond. We have a wide selection in a range of sizes starting at £4.50 per pot including waterlilies and mixed marginal planters.

 

The different types of plants we have:

Iris Versicolor – ‘American Water Iris’

Broad iris foliage with rich mauve flowers which bloom in July. Plant these in a medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place these on the marginal shelf and trim the foliage in the Autumn. Planting depth 5-15cm and spread to 60cm.

Acorus Gramineus Ogon – ‘Japanese Sweet Flag’

Grown for it’s striking foliage, this variegated form of Acorus Gramineus is striped golden-yellow and green. Plant in medium planting container in aquatic soil and cover in pea gravel. Plating depth 0-10cm and spread up to 30cm.

Equisetum Hyemale – ‘Horsetail Rush’

A large horsetail that has furrowed, hollow stems. Green and black bands give it a bamboo-like appearance. Planted for decorative foliage. Plant in a medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Planting depth 10-20cm and spread to 150cm.

Scirpus Cernus – ‘Slender Club Rush’

Bright green rush with slender leaves and brown flowers which grows in attractive clumps. Provides good habitat for wildlife. Plant in medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. A great oxygenating plant. They flower in July – Spetember, plating depth 0-10cm and spreads to 20-30cm.

Caltha Palustris – ‘Marsh Marigold (Kingcup)

Erect stems with round serrated foliage and bright yellow flowers. Plant in a medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place on marginal shelf and trim decaying foliage in Autumn. Flowering through March to May, planting depth 0-15cm and spreads to 60cm.

Veronica Beccabunga – ‘Brooklime’

Small round leaves on a creeping stem with blue flowers blooming May to September. Ideal for covering edges of containers. Plant with other plants or in a small/medium container with aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Trim any decaying foliage in the Autumn. Planting depth 0 -15cm and spread to 15cm.

Iris Pseudacorus – ‘Yellow Water Iris’

Tall broad Iris leaves with rich yellow flowers. Plant in medium-large containers using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place on marginal shelf or alternatively in a pool to a depth of 60cm (24in) – usually 0-15cm but will tolerate deeper. Flowering in the summer months of June to August with a spread of around 90cm, and in natural conditions can attain up to 150cm.

Juncus Effusus Spiralis – ‘Corkscrew Rush’

A quaint plant with stems which corkscrew and intertwine with each other. Plant these at 0-10cm and they can spread to 60cm.

 

Oenanthe Javanica Variegated – ‘Water Dropwort’

This improved variety has attractive pink margins to the leaves and white flowers bloom in July to September. They provide excellent foliage cover to planting shelves. Planting depth 0-10cm and spread between 10-60cm.

 

Ranunculus Lingua – ‘Grandiflora’ – ‘Great Spearwort’

Large pointed oval leaf on thick erect stems and yellow flowers through June – August. Plant in a medium to large container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place on marginal shelf or alternatively in a pool depth of up to 60cm. Spread of 60cm but in natural conditions can attain up to 120cm.

 

Myosotis Plaustris Southern Blues – ‘Forget-Me-Not’

Delicate blue flowers through May to September and bright green foliage makes an attractive combination for marginal planting. Plant in medium containers with aquatic soil and cover in pea gravel. Planting depth 0-25cm and spread to 23cm.

 

Acorus Gramineus – ‘Japanese Sweet Flag’

A pretty, decorative foliage plant with brightly striped leaves coloured green and pale cream. Leaves grow out in attractive fan shapes, contrasting nicely with other marginals. Plant in medium containers using aquatic compost and cover with pea gravel. Planting depth of 2.5-5cm and spreads to 50cm.

 

Cotula Coronopifolia – ‘Golden Buttons’

Mass of fern like green foliage covered with small, compact yellow button-like flowers. Plant in medium containers using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place on marginal shelf and trim any decaying foliage in Autumn. Flowering in May to October, planting depth of 0-15cm and spread up to 20cm.

 

 

Carex Pendula – ‘Pendulous Sedge’

This native plant has coarse, grassy foliage with brown spikelets and is very resistant to waterfowl. Formerly used for weaving and hop-typing. Flowering through July to August, plating depth of 5-15cm and spreads up to 120cm.

Mentha Aquatica – ‘Water Mint’

Creeping plant with lilac, aromatic leaves on erect stems. Plant in a medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Place on marginal shelf or alternatively in a pool depth of up to 45cm. Flowering from June to August and spreads between 60 and 90cm. Trim any decaying foliage in Autumn.

 

Mimulus Luteus – ‘Monkey Musk’

Pretty yellow flowers with red blotches on the throat and the petals are produced in abundance through June to August. A delightful plant for the pond margins or waterfall pools. Freshly serrated lettuce-like foliage. Plant in medium containers on the pond shelf or into the rockery adjacent to a waterfall where the soil is moist. Planting depth 0-15cm and spread to 45cm.

 

Mazus Reptans Albus – ‘White Mazus’

This delightful little creeping plant provides excellent cover for planting shelves or baskets raised above the water surface. Masses of pretty white flowers are produced over a long flowering season through June to September. Plant in moist conditions only. Spreads around 60-90cm.

 

Sisyrinchium Californicum – ‘Satin Flower’

Small yellow flowers are born on the top of miniature iris-type leaves through June to October. Forming in pretty clumps for pond side or shallow water planting. Plant in a medium container with aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Planting depth of 0-5cm and spreads to 15cm.

 

 

Rumex Sanguineus – ‘Red Veined Dock’

Grown for the striking foliage as the green leaves have striking red veins. Plant in a medium container using aquatic soil and cover with pea gravel. Flowering through July and August, Planting depth of 0-10cm and spreads 30-80cm.
