Remember our garden wildlife this winter

With the winter now here and the days feeling like a long stretch of darkness, let us not forget about the wildlife around us.

Wildlife should flourish in winter just as much as it does in the summer.

The Autumn and Winter months are the most important for Hedgehogs to find food to put on enough weight before hibernation.

HEDGEHOG HABITATS

Hedgehogs build nests of moss and leaves under vegetation around parks, gardens and farmland. They prefer woodland edges, hedgerows and suburban gardens where food is plentiful.

HEDGEHOG DIET

Hedgehogs feed on insects, snails, frogs and toads, caterpillars, worms, beetles,  mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons and watermelons. Its favourite food is slugs and worms, they may eat 40 or more slugs a night. Hedgehog dry food is a good alternative to offer to the hedgehogs in the garden.

And of course we can’t forget the birds..The red-breasted Robin is a symbol of winter-time after all!

How to provide for the birds?

There is a range of feeders and bird tables available, A range of foods, presented around the garden in different types of feeder, will attract more birds.

• Hanging feeders
These are ideal for feeding seed blends, peanuts, nyger seed, suet balls, sunflower hearts and seeds. The great advantage of hanging feeders is that you can easily position them in a safe location close to your home or a perfect garden spot, where you can enjoy watching birds as they feed.
• Bird tables
Bird tables and feeding stations are also highly recommended, as some species, such as Blackbirds, struggle to use hanging feeders. Bird tables keep food dry and offer a sheltered spot for birds to feed. These are great for all seed blends and suet based treats.
