Gardening Advice For February
A month has already past of the New Year and now we are getting a step closure to the spring weather arriving. There is plenty of jobs you can be doing in the garden this February to help prepare you garden.
Garden Maintenance
Keep digging over your beds and boarders, whilst doing this try and add as much organic matter as you can. Forking over the soil not only helps prepare the soil for spring, but it also helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds.
We should see a temperature starting to increase this month, but it’s not always a guarantee; we still have the risk of frost and snow. Protect any plants that are vulnerable by wrapping insulation around them and take any pots or containers off the ground. Your trees and shrubs will also be grateful for protection of their roots, as this will stop them from freezing.
When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls, clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly.
Bulbs & Flowers
Grow some snowdrops in your garden; once they start to bloom they will bring some colour to your garden before spring finally arrives.
Pot up some lily bulbs to flower in early summer keep them somewhere light and frost free. Only increase your watering once the soil dries out or you begin to see shots appear above the soil. Bring dahlias out of hibernation and also keep them somewhere light and frost free.
You can begin to brighten up your garden by planting some pansies, violas, primroses and heathers – pansies are a great way to help you make a colourful display in your garden. If we do get warmer weather, remember to water all your plants especially if they are in a more sheltered area. Take care not to over water.
Lawns
Keep off your lawn as much as you can whilst it is still wet – damage to waterlogged lawns is difficult to repair. If we do see the weather get better towards the end of the month, if the lawn is firm you get mow it but put the blades on the highest setting.
Kitchen Garden
Cover strawberry plants with garden fleece to help them grow fruit faster than they normally would.
Plant any bare-rooted fruit trees and summer raspberries, protect your fruit trees with some netting; birds love developing fruit buds and your entire crop will disappear unless you protect it.
Sow any vegetable and salad seeds in trays and leave in the greenhouse, keep them on the windowsill in the light, any natural light will help develop them faster.
