10 Top Tips To Prepare Your Garden For Spring

Over the winter months we tend to abandon the garden until the weather gets a little better. To make sure you get the best out of your garden in the spring you need to make some preparations for those spring flowers.

Here are some top tips on how to prepare your garden:

Bulbs & Seeds

Bulbs

On a wet and windy day this is the perfect task. Buy your required seeds and bulbs that you wish to plant in your garden for the spring and summer, plant these deep into the soil. Flowers such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Daffodils can be planted early so they will bloom just in time for the spring and summer months. Take a look at our range of bulbs and seeds.

Beds & Borders

Getting wrapped up and braving the elements of winter to clean up the garden is the perfect Sunday afternoon task. Tidy up those borders, lawns and ponds cut back any dead plants and clear up those leaves. If you want to be friendly to the wildlife you’re best leaving the tidying up till early spring.

Clean Your Greenhouse

Just like your garden your greenhouse will have been left over the winter, so make sure you give it some TLC. Give the outside a wash down, any green moss may have started to develop on the glass so use some hot soapy water to get rid of it. Sweep out any debris from the floor and clear out all those seed boxes ready for the new ones to be planted. Disinfect the inside of the greenhouse as well as any overwintering pests and disease can survive in small areas.

Sow Your Seeds

Sowing Seeds

January and February are the perfect time for you to start sewing any seeds that require a little more time to grow. Some seeds will need to be grown in a slightly warmer environment so maybe pop them in your conservatory  where you can have warm spells and cold spells.

Garden Pests

Remove any hibernating pests from your garden because come the spring and summer they will destroy your plants. Check under the leaves of any plants you have and make sure they have all gone, use some pest sprays to help you with this.

Water Butts

Install water butts in your garden to collect rain fall. Not only is this good for the environment and you’re recycling rain water but natural rain water will help grow the plant better than feeding them tap water. Helpful tip: Install a water butt near a down pipe to make the most of the rainfall.

Move Any Over-Grown Shrubs

If you have a shrub that is badly placed, maybe it is growing into next doors garden or it has grown too large and you need to move them, do it now while they are dormant. Dig enough space around the root ball and move it to its new location and plant it in the same way it was before it was dug up. Keep a close eye on its development over the next few weeks to prevent it from dying.

Fences & Gates

Fixing your fence

It’s best to get these jobs done now so you can focus on the gardening come the spring and summer. Fix any broken fences or gates, if they are slightly broken or wobbly use some strong nails to pin it back together. Give the fences and gates a brush down to clear any dust or debris off, when the weather gets a little warmer you can freshen them up with some paint.

Gardening Tools

Clean and sharpen those gardening tools. Wash them down with some disinfectant to get rid of any disease that could be living on them before you start planting in the garden.

Compost Bin

If you haven’t got one already why not buy or create a compost bin. You can set up an area in your garden where you can recycle all your household waste such as grass clippings, vegetable peelings, paper and wood pruning’s – all these general waste items will help create a rich compost for your plants, which they will love.

With these top 10 tips for preparing your garden you should see a great improvement in how your garden will look over the spring and summer months – fingers crossed we will get the nice weather too.
